Ghostek – Random Memories
I very much doubt if this release will be able to surface without people mentioning Burial. Sure enough I’ve done it myself, but I guess when someone sets a precedence with a particular sound, they’re always going to be the go-to point for comparisons.
Nevertheless, I think Ghostek should be considered in hos own right. Not least, because despite taking influence from said producer, he’s still taking things in his own direction (see Underworld from his new release for a good example).
Random Memories is described as “a retrospective look at the sound that gained Ghostek a worldwide following”. In that sense, it’s a great place to start if you’re unfamiliar with this Russian producer’s work.
Existing fans of his work should find something in there they’ve not heard before, while new intrigued listeners should find a wealth of tracks to choose from.
Fans of Burial (here we go again) should most definitely check Ghostek out – but I would say, anybody who is in to deep, introspective electronic music should definitely take a listen. The more you allow your ear to explore these tracks, the more you’ll find to enjoy.
Random Memories is out on the producer’s co-owned label Square Harmony on Christmas Day, so those who find themselves stuck for something to do once all the gifts have been opened, and the whisky’s run dry might like to jump online and check this out.
